Dr Kanwaljit Soin

Former Nominated Member of Parliament

Kanwaljit Soin is an Orthopaedic and Hand Surgeon who retired in 2022 after 56 years in medical practice. She was Singapore’s first female Nominated Member of Parliament (1992–1996) and was inducted to the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame in 2014. A founding member of the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) in 1985; she was its president from 1991 to 1993. Dr Soin was the founding chair of the Singapore chapter of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the founding president of Women’s Initiative for Ageing Successfully (WINGS). She has received the Singapore Medical Association Merit Award, the International Women’s Forum ‘Women Who Make a Difference Award’, the UNIFEM Lifetime Achievement Award, and Singapore’s Woman of the Year award.

Dr Soin is the author of Silver Shades of Grey: Memos for Successful Ageing in the 21st Century. Together with Margaret Thomas, she has edited 2 books—Our Lives to Live: Putting a Woman’s Face to Change in Singapore and Why Not? Thinking about Singapore’s Tomorrow.
