‘Women are not as impactful as men!’, ‘Women can’t do everything men can do!’ These are perspectives that many of us might have had when growing up. This is where the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame comes in. Through exhibitions and talks, we aim to change the mind-sets of many, especially the younger generation, by sharing inspiring stories of pioneering and outstanding women in Singapore. Member Spotlight: Singapore Muslim Women’s Association (PPIS)
The Singapore Muslim Women’s Association or Persatuan Pemudi Islam Singapura (PPIS) was set up in 1952 with a mission to inspire women and strengthen families. From a group of 22 founding members who voluntarily ran empowerment and development programmes while bringing errant husbands to court, the organisation is now staffed by 190 professionals. Today, PPIS runs 16 centres island-wide and offers services such as early childhood education centres, student care services, specialised social and family services as well as training and consultancy programmes. How Ready are Women for Retirement in Singapore?
We all know that Singapore has one of the fastest ageing populations in the world. The question is, are we prepared? SCWO collaborated with Centre for Research on the Economics of Ageing (CREA) to hold a focus group discussion to discuss the issue of Women’s Preparedness for Ageing and Retirement. A total of 29 people, including representatives from various member organisations, attended the event held on 8th May. CREA surveyed more than 8,000 Singaporeans aged 50 to 70 who came from various backgrounds and Professor Rhema Vaithianathian, the Co-Principal Investigator, shared some of their findings with the audience.
