A screening of "The Lady" for a good cause


Join us for an inspirational evening as we witness the story of Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi. Starring Michelle Yeoh and directed by French filmmaker, Luc Besson.

As part of their International Women's Day celebration, AWARE is holding a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Miss Representation on March 4, Sunday, 2pm at The Substation.

Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence.


Sugar & Spice: Women talk about girlhood

In conjunction with International Women's Day 2012, Etiquette and The Association of Women for Action & Research (AWARE) come together to present Sugar & Spice, a reading of poetry and prose by women writers.

Inspired by Eve Ensler's TEDTalk "Embrace Your Inner Girl", and in line with the international theme for IWD2012 "Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures", Sugar & Spice investigates ideas of girlhood, with writers reading original pieces as well as pieces written by women they admire.

Curated by Zarina Muhammad and Tania De Rozario, the line-up includes writers such as Ovidia Yu, Dana Lam, Nurul H and Shubigi Rao. Also on the menu is a video by Zarina Muhammad and Lisa Li, documenting interviews of women above 50, addressing issues central to their childhoods.

The celebration will be held on 10 March 2012 (Sat) from 8:30am to 2:00pm, at the Esplanade Park. Please refer to the above publicity poster for more details.

NTUC WDS would like to invite your organisation to send members to participate in this event. They would be distributing invite cards to all participants. The invite cards would allow participants to join in the fun walk and for redemption of goodie bags thereafter.

In view of this, please let NTUC WDS know an estimated number of invite cards that would be needed for your members, latest by 23 February (Thurs) via the attached request for invite cards. They will send over the invite cards to the unions for distribution from 24 February (Fri) onwards.

Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World - by UN Women and Mastercard

UN Women Singapore and MasterCard Worldwide will mark International Women's Day 2012 with the second edition of Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World. This year-long initiative encourages socially-inspired people between the ages of 18 and 35 years old to pitch a life changing idea that will empower disadvantaged women and girls in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa through entrepreneurship. A USD 25,000 Women's Empowerment grant will be awarded to support the winning project in creating greater impact in the lives of women and girls.

Women's Development Secretariat

WDS will be celebrating IWD 2012 on Sat, 10 March, 8.30 am to 2 pm at the Esplanade Park. Special Guest is Secretary-General NTUC, Mr Lim Swee Say. They are expecting about 2,500 participants including registered job seekers, union members and WDS working partners.

The theme for their event is "We Support Women Back To Work".

It will start with a short walk early in the morning with Mr Lim Swee Say and back to the event area. There will be stage activities and fringe events clustered according to "Work", "Live" and "Play".
