2011 marks a very special year for women’s organisations worldwide as it is Global Centenary of International Women’s Day. SCWO celebrated this important milestone in the progress of women to fair partnership in family, social, business and political life with a theme dedicated to “Creating the Future – Women in Society, Economy & Government”.
In conjunction with the UN declaration of 2011 being the Year of the Youth, SCWO engaged the youths of Singapore by organising the inaugural SCWO Debating Tournament, in partnership with the Singapore Management University (SMU) Debating Society, an inter-tertiary Debate focused on women-centric motions from 25-27 February.
Our Celebration Dinner on 9 March at the Regent Hotel honoured our Patron, Mrs SR Nathan for 10 years of patronage with a handmade quilt of our IWD events over the decade. An awards ceremony was also held for the winning and runner up teams of the debating competition with a speech made by the Best Speaker of the tournament. The biggest draw of the evening was the first ever screening of the SCWO-commissioned video “We Are 100” featuring women from our past, present and future, outlining their triumphs and tribulations through the years. It is a historical documentary of the progress of Singapore Women for the last 100 years.
We concluded our IWD Celebrations with the re-painting of the SCWO Mural on 19 March with the help of Social Creatives. A plethora of social community groups –members of SCWO Member Organisations, Young PAP and Fuchun Executive Committee, as well as troops from the USA Girl Scouts in Singapore and volunteers from SG Cares and Social Creatives – gathered to paint and soak in the community spirit and camaraderie.
Video – 100 Voices
This video charts 100 years of the progress of women in Singapore, and incorporates the voices of the women and their children/grand children across the 51 member organisations of SCWO. It was screened at the IWD Celebration Dinner on 9 March. Here's to share with those who missed it:
Date: 25 - 27 Feb 2011
Venue: Singapore Management University (SMU)
This inaugural Debating Championship was held in collaboration with The Singapore Management University (SMU). It targeted at students of tertiary institutions in Singapore, to engage the future generations and thought leaders, to hear their views, understand their concerns and learn from their hopes for the future. This was the start of an annual tournament, which we hope will develop to include regional and international debate teams in the coming years.
The Celebration dinner held at the Regent Hotel Singapore was graced by our patron, First Lady Mrs Urmila Nathan and by Minister of State, MCYS, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon. The program included the presentation of awards for the Debating Championship. The highlight of the evening was the presentation, for the first time, the SCWO video “100 Voices” featuring women from our past, present and future, outlining their triumphs and tribulations through the years. This is a historical documentary of the progress of Singapore Women for the last 100 years and is lodged with relevant archival institutions.
