ABOUT WOMEN IN ARTS FESTIVAL
The exhibition “Poetry in Action – Women’s Lives” the Women in Arts Festival 2010, held as part of Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) 30th Anniversary celebrations – “Celebrating Women”.
In line with the 30th Anniversary theme, the festival will recognise and celebrate the diverse contributions women artists have made in the art arena.
The 16 days festival presents works from both extablished and emerging women artists from Singapore, Singapore-based, Australia and Mexico, showcasing their interpretations of the different roles women play in society and will officially be opened on 6th of January by Guest-of-Honour Mr. Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts.
The exhibition will be held at The Substation for Mexican Artists <insert Substation link>, The Australian High Commission for Australian Artists <insert link>, and SCWO for the Singapore based artists.
The closing of the Arts Festival will culminate in an Auction Evening of live music, wine and cocktails, during which selected pieces will be put up for auction. Invited guests from the art, business and professional field will be invited to the actual event where they can bid for the art work. Artists have generously agreed to contribute a substantial portion of the sales proceeds to SCWO Service Fund and The Substation.
ABOUT SCWO
Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) is the national coordinating body for women’s organisations in Singapore. Together with its 54 member organisations SCWO serves the different needs of Singapore women and works towards advancing the status of women in Singapore.
SCWO also these programmes; The Star Shelter, a temporary crisis shelter for women and their children who are victims of family violence, Women’s Register, a programme to nurture, encourage and provide women leaders with networking opportunities, and the recently set-up SCWO Service Fund.
Funds raised during the auction will be directed to the SCWO Service Fund. The key activities of the SCWO Service Fund include;
Research, Publications and Public Forums – To research, study and promote measures to protect women and improve their lives, such as review and promoting women’s rights through the Women’s Charter, Enforcement of Maintenance Orders and CEDAW
Education– Organising talks, symposia and outreach to help, educate, inspire and protect women, primarily but not exclusively, single-mothers, retrenched women, housewives, lower-income women and young women
Skills Upgrading – IT Skills training for the retrenched, retired and housewives.
Assistance Scheme - Drop-In-Centre for distressed women to be directed to appropriate assistance and financial assistance scheme, where food vouchers will be distributed to women and families in need.
ABOUT SUBSTATION
Founded in 1990 by the late Kuo Pao Kun, The Substation is Singapore's first independent contemporary arts centre. We present and co-present a wide range of artists and programmes, from traditionally trained dancers to local rock bands; established visual artists to young poets; publications to international short film festivals; experimental theatre to seminal conferences on Singapore arts and culture.
Over the years, The Substation has worked with some of Singapore's most critically acclaimed artists, writers and intellectuals; currently we are working closely with our Associate Artists. Just as importantly, younger and emerging artists are constantly approaching us to use our venues, and to get our support. We are always open to new proposals and ideas, and would like to hear from you.
